Letters, 1837 Jan. 17 and Sept. 11, from Hall, in Mobile, Mobile Co., Ala., to Alden Lewis, in New Haven, Conn. In both letters Hall discussed the bank crisis in Ala., and the general economic conditions in Mobile. He pays particular attention to the "confused" directors of the State Bank of Ala., to the actions taken by the Mobile branch bank directors to avoid financial disaster, and to attempts by land speculators (especially southern planters) to sell real estate. Neither of the last two met with much success. Changes and power struggles within the Mobile branch bank directors are detailed, with Hall presenting a negative view of the directors as a whole. In the second letter is a detailed description of Lewis's account with the Mobile branch bank, the falling real estate prices and rents, and economic conditions generally, as well as a description of Gov. A.P. Bagby as a drunk.
